Jan Kocian works his craft from the bustling, bohemian “artists' precinct” at Barry Brickell's famous Driving Creek Railway, in Coromandel Township.
He moves quickly around his modest studio with an assurance born of many years of experience. It is a demanding environment requiring concentration and a keen awareness of this constantly moving medium.
All day long the narrow gauge trains rumble past Jan at work as they wind their way up through the native forest of the Coromandel Ranges.
Around his studio, resident and visiting potters work with the local clay and fire their kilns.
A small traditional brick works operates nearby.
